Biochar mitigation of allelopathic effects in three invasive plants: evidence from seed germination trials

چکیده
Many invasive species show allelopathic effects that contribute to competitive impacts on native vegetation for which few control measures exist. We investigated the potential pyrolized organic material used as a soil amendment (“biochar”) sorb allelochemicals and mitigate seed germination early seedling development in three common plants Canada: garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), yellow sweetgrass (Melilotus officinalis). hypothesized biochars would (radicle extension cotyledon development) through sorption allelochemicals. Laboratory assays two agricultural crops (Lactuca sativa Raphinus raphanistrum) grass (Andropogon gerardi Poa palustris) were conducted using water extracts from leaves. Seeds treated with plant exposed four different (red oak (Quercus rubra), jack pine (Pinus banksiana), shipping pallet construction waste, high-carbon wood ash) range extract biochar dosages. Treatment by significantly (p < 0.05) mitigated Alliaria Melilotus. Effects depended concentration, dosage, target assessed. Controls leachate alone showed increased tested (jack ash). Results indicated can allelochemicals; however, this will be effective only some cases.

Investigating Allelopathic Effects of Artemisia sieberi on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth Indices of Three Alfalfa Species
Allelopathy is one of the main factors limiting the plants growth. The present study investigated the effect of aqueous extract of leaves and fruit of Artemisia sieberi that is an important species for rangeland rehabilitation on seed germination and seedling growth of three alfalfa species (Medicago sativa cv. Nikshahri, Medicago polymorpha and Medicago scutellata cv. Robinson) in laboratory ...
متن کاملAllelopathic Effects of Some Medicinal Plants Extracts on Seed Germination and Growth of Common Weeds in Mashhad Area
Allelopathy can be regarded as a component of biological control in which plants are used to reduce the vigour and development of other plants. Allelopathy refers to the direct or indirect chemical effects of one plant on the germination, growth, or development of neighbouring plants. The allelopathic effects of leaf extracts of Thymus vulgaris, Lavadula sp, Rosmarinus officinalis and Eucalyptu...

A bioassay-directed phytochemical study was carried out to investigate potential allelochemicals of the invasive plant Merremia umbellata subsp. orientalis (Hall. f.). Eight phenolic compounds, including a salicylic acid (SA)-derived new natural product, SA 2-O-β-D-(3',6'-dicaffeoyl)-glucopyranoside (1), and seven known ones 2-8 were isolated and identified from two bioactive sub-fractions of t...
متن کاملThe allelopathic effects of Atriplex canescens (Four wing saltbush) on seed germination of Salsola rigida
Abstract One basic method of improving rangelands in a country is the use of native as well as exotic species of plants adaptable. Among the but introduced species, Atriplex canescens has been introduced in many rangelands, but it is important and necessary to consider it’s effects on native species. In the current study the effect of chemical competition (allelopathy) of Atriplex canescens o...
متن کاملAllelopathic Effects of Medicinal Plants of Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena and Bitter Apple on Seed Germination and Early Seedling Growth Characteristics of Wild Mustard Weed
Allelopathy refers to the chemical inhibition or stimulation of one species by another which could influence on the growth or germination of other plant and used in control of weed in agricultural practices. In this sense in order to study the possibly allelopathic effects of lemon balm, bitter apple and lemon verbena medicinal plants on control of wild mustard weed, a laboratory experiment was...
